Sau những thất bại không đáng có trong 2 phiên bản trước là ProStreetvà Undercover, EA đã quyết định giao quyền phát triển cho Slightly Mad (nổi tiếng với loạt game đua xe GTR) với mong muốn giúp series Need for Speed lấy lại thời hoàng kim.
Giống với ProStreet, game bó buộc người chơi ở những vòng đua (sẽ không còn cảnh chạy vòng vòng tham quan thành phố như tại Most Wanted hay Carbon), đây có thể là điều gây thất vọng cho một vài game thủ nhưng đừng quá lo lắng, bởi lẽ, trò chơi tuyệt hơn nhiều những gị bạn nghĩ. Khái niệm "lái xe mô phỏng" đã được nâng lên một tầm cao mới (tuy chắc chắn rằng không chân thực bằng Gran Turismo) và lồng ghép khéo léo vào dạng đua arcade truyền thống, khiến Shift có một lối chơi cực kì thú vị.
Điểm nổi bật đầu tiên mà Slightly Mad mang lại cho người chơi là hệ thống các trường đua nổi tiếng trên thế giới như Laguna Seca, Willow Springs hay Nurburgring được tái hiện khá chân thực, dù không thể giống đến 100% vì nhà phát triển đã thêm vào một số chi tiết làm cho nó hấp dẫn hơn. Ngoài ra, hiệu ứng vật lý tuyệt vời mà game mang lại, khi con "chiến mã" BMW M3 đạt vận tốc 150 mph, cảnh vật bên đường sẽ mờ hẳn đi và nếu "chạm" đến mốc trên 200 mph (khoảng 322 km/giờ), bạn sẽ cảm nhận được chiếc xế rung lắc dữ dội và cảm giác bất an đang dâng trào, chỉ một sai sót nhỏ, bánh xe trượt trên mặt đường, va chạm khủng khiếp sẽ xảy ra, nên nhớ rằng Shift có yếu tố "mô phỏng", hãy giảm ga để vào cua tốt hơn ở những "đường cong tử thần".
Người chơi sẽ rất thích cách điều khiển xe trong phần này, nó tạo thử thách thật sự nhưng không quá khó như vài game mô phỏng khác, một số game thủ quen với dạng arcade có thể sẽ hơi lúng túng khi làm quen vì không phải muốn lái sao cũng được, nhưng khi đã quen rồi thì nó rất tuyệt.
Cũng không thể không nhắc đến bộ sưu tập xe đồ sộ mà Need for Speed Shift đã mang lại, hơn 60 chiếc với thương hiệu nổi tiếng đã được "bê" nguyên vào như Audi R8, Ford GT, Lamborghini Gallardo, Mercedes-Benz SL65..., tất cả đều được thiết kế rất giống ngoài đời và bạn vẫn có thể "độ" theo ý thích qua tiền thưởng kiếm được ở mỗi màn chơi.
Đồ họa mà EA đem đến rất tốt, hình ảnh những siêu xe được tái hiện như thật với vẻ ngoài bóng loáng, các chi tiết được thiết kế cực kì tỉ mỉ, ngoài tính "mờ ảo" đã nhắc đế ở trên thì game còn gây ấn tượng mạnh bằng hiệu ứng ánh sáng và những vụ tung xe "ngoạn mục". Âm thanh cũng tương xứng với những yếu tố khác, những bản track tạo một cảm giác rực lửa, phấn khích cực độ trên đường đua, tiếng rền của động cơ, tiếng rít của gió, bánh xe trượt trên mặt đường....đều xuất sắc.
Need for Speed: Shift is the 13th installment of the long-running racing video game franchise Need for Speed published by Electronic Arts. It was announced in January 2009 as part of a three-game announcement that includes Need for Speed: Nitro and Need for Speed: World Online.[3] Shift is under development by Slightly Mad Studios—who, under their former name Blimey! Games helped develop GT Legends and GTR 2 together with SimBin Studios—with help of Michael Mann (EP at EA Black Box) and Patrick Söderlund (senior VP of EA Games and head of DICE). In the new franchising model for the series adopted by EA, Shift takes its place aiming at hardcore gamers and focusing on simulation racing and realistic drifting rather than the arcade racing of previous titles in the series. It focuses less on street racing and more on simulating the driver experience and is being described as a racing game built by racers for racers.
According to an interview from Shift's producer, Geever, the game has been in development for two years. He also mentioned that the game will feature a new "Driver experience". G-force will play an important role in the game, as it will affect both the player and the AI. The in-car view will also return, making its first appearance in a Need for Speed game since Porsche Unleashed. The in-car view will be highly detailed, and it will be possible to see the driver changing gears and moving his head to get a better view of the mirror. The crashes will affect the players visuals. While crashing, there will be a temporary blur on screen. The sound aspect will have detailed car crash sound, as well as a sharp gasp of breath from the driver before a collision
Race Types
Races types in Need for Speed: Shift range from traditional circuit races, Point-to point sprints & Time trials to specialized race events like Drifting events and Car battle modes.
Features
* Physics model of NFS: Shift is based on those of the “Ferrari Project”
* Professional setting is more accurate to drive than in GTR2
* Eero Piitulainen of Richard Burns Rally has developed a totally new tire-physics model which is mainly responsible for the new physics
* The difference between the 3 physics-models is in assist levels, while the lowest setting will provide around 10% of more tire grip for beginners
* Lots of effort has gone into handling development so the game can be driven with a controller
* Professional setting will require a wheel in order to successfully manage throttle/braking and steering inputs
* Shift will feature different car classes - from normal cars like the Golf GTI up to racing cars like the Aston Martin DBR9
* All cars can be upgraded and tuned from the inside-out
* Most tracks are licensed European and American circuits with few fictional tracks
* There will be few city-circuits
* The cockpit is the most important visual feature of the game
* Head-physics is the key difference point to other titles
* The career mode will span over a total of 125 events
